Update
New in the library: air quality, clean water and groundwater
We've added a plain-language guide to air quality, the Clean Water Act and groundwater, gathered from U.S. government sources. It explains the Air Quality Index, the five major air pollutants, and how water below ground is stored and protected.
We've added a new document to the library: Air Quality, Clean Water Act and Groundwater. It brings together short, plain-language explanations from U.S. government sources, so you can read the basics in one place.
What's inside
The guide covers three topics:
- Air quality and the Air Quality Index. What the index measures, and what the colors and numbers mean for your day.
- The Clean Water Act. How the law sets quality standards for lakes, rivers and coastal waters, and who is responsible for them.
- Groundwater and aquifers. Where the water under our feet is stored, and why it matters for drinking water.
Who it's for
It's written for anyone who wants a quick, reliable starting point: residents, students, community groups and staff who answer questions from the public.
Tip: each section of the guide has its own link, so you can share the exact part someone needs.
How to use it
- Open the guide.
- Use the list of sections at the top to jump to a topic.
